The Red Arrows at Marshall’s Airshow
Sunday, September 20th, 2009Odd day – went to the cinema to see the excellent “Black Narcissus” (part of the Cambridge Film Festival Jack Cardiff tribute) and as I was walking back past the quarries on the edge of town a Vulcan Bomber flew low over my head. Then another jet (a Mirage I think) did the same and then a Lancaster Bomber.
I was walking under an airshow, obviously, but as to what airshow I was not sure – but Twitter soon turned up the answer. Apparently it’s the centenary of Marshall Airfield and the airshow was for that. Marshall Airfield is minutes from my house and when a neighbour told us that the Red Arrows were flying at 6 we gathered a few kids (ours and neighbours) and took to the high land (all overgrown landfill) that overlooks the airfield and found we probably had the best seats for a fantastic show. The noise as the jets, only 150 yards in front of us, started their engines, (their afterburners maybe ?) was massive, as was the sound of them all banking low over our heads. All really really thrilling.
I don’t think I’m too nerdy about planes. I just get a bit of a thrill seeing them. It’s a bit like Cathedrals. I don’t know much about them but I like them. Don’t know why? Just do.
(All these pics are thumbnails so click on them to see the big pictures- and the last one is obviously not a Red Arrow. It’s a Flying Fortress I think. It was also rumbling low over our heads).
It was a good day.

- Anyone else going to see Dinosaur Jr tonight in Cambridge- I'll be the annoying twat at the back weeping and hollering. #
- Ooh. They've opened the 2nd bar at the Junction. Things just get better and better #
- One of many things I like about Dinosaur Jr is that they have that "fuck off. This is what we do quality" like, say, The Fall #
- I also like it that J Mascis has started to look like Dumbledore #

- Party scene. Girls with big hair, boys with heavily gelled hair all dancing wildly to Killing Jokes' "80s". Uh oh! Here come the parents #

- Nice to see Hart making lame excuses 3 games into Pompey' season. #
- Brief interlude for MOTD & then on I plough into the night with the film version of Less Than Zero. Not John Hughes but sort of in the area #
- Ferris Bueller great. Possibly the best of all John Hughes' films, but I have seen it plenty of times. #
- @CherryHintonBlu Nice photos. in reply to CherryHintonBlu #
- Reading Less Than Zero in my 40s & the nihilism at heart seems brattish but the film gives it a gloss as the story tries to resolve itself #
- Andrew Mccarthy is great though. Once told a very pretty girl that if I was gay Andrew Mccarthy would be my type. Won me a memorable kiss #

- errr down went two wickets. (Not making this up). #
- Amazing if they got those last wickets during one play of the Duckworth Lewis LP. It's looking likely. 3 songs left. 1 wicket. #
- ..and the Duckworth Lewis LP has just finished. Played it through once – 5 wickets fell. The end of the over is over is over is over… #

- @fireflybelle What's better than a good book, a both and candles? In my world that would be beer, donuts and heavy metal in reply to fireflybelle #
- Is that John Cusack? Is that John Cusack playing the chief geek's geeky side kick? #
- …and now there's Joan Cusack playing nerdy girl. #
