Why I Need To Clear My Attic.
I need to clear my attic and I need to do it before the 2010 World Cup which starts in 200 days.
I hoard stuff. What you can see in these pictures of my attic is the booty of a ramshackle, gadabout, ill disciplined life of low level consumption.
And that’s not all of it. As well as all this lot my house is full of crammed cupboards and packed book shelves and stuffed nooks and rammed crannies.
There’s just stuff everywhere.
At night, in bed, when I cannot sleep I stare at the ceiling knowing that above my head is this mass of stuff, this weight, hovering above my head. It feels like it’s starting to press down on me. I need to get rid of it.
So here is my plan.
Between now and the start of the World Cup I am going to sort through, and prune back this mass of stuff. Some of it will be sold on Ebay, some stuff will be given away, some stuff will be thrown away, some stuff will be stored digitally and despite the best of best intentions some of the stuff will be kept.
I have not really worked out a method to do this. Originally I was going going to get a big box of stuff down from the attic at the start of each week – but that seems a bit daunting. Instead I think I’ll pick through it 3 or 4 things at a time and will keep this blog charting the whole process. Again I’m not too sure how that’s going to work but what I have done is drawn up a provisional list of themes or keywords that may help me get started.
These keywords are – Dylan Thomas, 2000AD, Very English Films, Jazz, German Literature, Politics, The Romantics, Bible, Monty Python, Very English Telly, Spike Milligan, Rebus, Classical Music, Food, Poetry, James Joyce, Battle comic, Mankell, Classics, Ireland, Dickens, Philosophy, U2, Marx, Beatles, Bowie, Elvis, Evelyn Waugh, Patrick O’Brien, Football, Art, French Literature, Nazis, David Lynch, Cinema, HBO, Russian Literature, Science, Indie, Heavy Metal, America and Lenin.
And finally.
Since quitting working in Museums in 2002 I’ve sort of drifted into doing stuff online as a way of making a living (between childcare and doing up a flat). I quite like it and whilst it really is not very lucrative I made enough money to cover the mortgage. I don’t really expect that this blog will make much money (I expect that flogging my old CDs on Ebay will make more money and that won’t be that much). However there will be the judicious use of affiliate links.
More importantly I do know that I need to brush up on using Google’s Analytics and on the rules of SEO (and by brush up I mean learn) so I’m going to be using this 200 day blog as a way of doing that. I also want to experiment a bit. Try different ways of making pages and different ways of presenting information. Think of it of as a 200 day learning curve set amongst the clutter I’ve built up during my 42 years on this planet.
Or don’t.
It’s up to you.
