The Fenland Gent

The lad that sings with Stornoway looks like a member of the pre WW1 officer class. He has a high, strong, boyish voice. I could imagine him singing The Eton Boating Song. If he could act, I’d cast him as the lead in a film about A War Poet.

I’m not sure about some of his rhymes. “Attic” with “Static” in The song Zorbing always makes me wince a bit.

But I like that song and 2 or 3 others. I like they seem a bit posh (not sure they are though). I like that they are very English.

Cocos Lovers were fine. They kept a big crowd in the club tent entertained and seemed to be entertaining themselves at the same time.

The top row of photos are of Cocos Lovers, the next row is Stornoway. They’re thumbnails. I cheated with the photos and mucked around with them to make the pictures look better because the originals were a bit tatty.

I’m only posting this because I’m just mucking about with the various photography sites/apps and seeing which works best with WordPress. Must say that I’m impressed with Flickr so far.

This photo was taken last Sunday morning. I’ve never seen so many yachts in the Solent. This lot seemed to be in a class race of some sor but I know nothing about yachts.

..but I’ve never set a foot inside a tent.

….but actually I have been inside a tent – on idiotic school trips & at festivals in the late 80s and early 90s. Not sure I ever saw the Lemonheads at a festival in those days (for those that got the lyrical reference in the title) but I did learn that I hate camping.

This campsite is very near to my parent’s house and is also very near to a busy main road. There’s a railway nearby and the planes landing at Southampton airport pass overheard. It’s about as remote and rural at Hyde Park.

Still – my daughter’s enjoying it.

The Jolly Sailor, in the village of Bursledon, on the River Hamble is possibly best known as the pub in the 80’s TV series Howard’s Way.
Since then I think the pub has been taken over by a chain and is essentially a gastropub. The food is somewhere between decent and very good but it is expensive, but as a place to eat or drink on a summer’s evening it’s close to perfect.
The photos below are of the pub, the view from the pub, the boat yard next to the pub (which I think may have been the Mermaid Yard in the tv series) & a poor quality photo of a framed Howard’s Way picture of the cast that sits in the bar.

Odd day – went to the cinema to see the excellent “Black Narcissus” (part of the Cambridge Film Festival Jack Cardiff tribute) and as I was walking back past the quarries on the edge of town a Vulcan Bomber flew low over my head. Then another jet (a Mirage I think) did the same and then a Lancaster Bomber.

I was walking under an airshow, obviously, but as to what airshow I was not sure – but Twitter soon turned up the answer. Apparently it’s the centenary of Marshall Airfield and the airshow was for that. Marshall Airfield is minutes from my house and when a neighbour told us that the Red Arrows were flying at 6 we gathered a few kids (ours and neighbours) and took to the high land (all overgrown landfill) that overlooks the airfield and found we probably had the best seats for a fantastic show. The noise as the jets, only 150 yards in front of us, started their engines, (their afterburners maybe ?) was massive, as was the sound of them all banking low over our heads. All really really thrilling.

I don’t think I’m too nerdy about planes. I just get a bit of a thrill seeing them. It’s a bit like Cathedrals. I don’t know much about them but I like them. Don’t know why? Just do.

It was a good day.

I’ve had my tea and I’m sitting down to watch this.

And I’m still hankering after moments like that.

Fish and chip supper on the beach on a lovely summer’s evening in Weymouth. Happy days.

I’ve written a blog entry here about places I would recommend to eat in Portland and Dorset.

One of the many great things about the Cambridge Folk Festival is the quality of the food on offer. My personal favourite is the Northfield Farm burger van. Northfield Farm is an award winning farm who rear and finish traditional breeds of beef, pork and lamb. This quality is maintained in their burger van – the burgers taste exquisite – especially with the blue veined cheddar. The rolls were light and fresh (I think they came from a local Cambridge baker). I found it better to avoid the onions as this made the burger too greasy – but other than this minor criticism this burger van were selling some of the nicest burgers I’ve eaten. As well as the beef they also had pork and lamb burgers as well as bacon and sausages. I didn’t try these but someone who did vouched for the quality.

Such excellent fare proved popular, but the staff, most of who were little more than kids seemed to carry on with a polite confidence and composure that seems in short supply amongst the nation’s youth. The photo above was taken late on the Sunday night as the festival was finishing. I imagine they were knackered – but hopefully they made a lot of money and after working so hard all weekend serving such lovely burgers they deserved a sit down and a fag.
